Mt. Mahadev, towering at an impressive altitude of 3966 meters (13,011 feet) above sea level, is the highest peak in the Zabarwan mountain range and the highest point in the entire district of Srinagar. Its commanding presence offers a stunning panoramic view of the Srinagar city below, making it a prominent landmark in the region. The majestic peak is visible from almost every corner of Srinagar, creating a breathtaking backdrop that enhances the city’s natural beauty. Situated in close proximity to the renowned Dachigam National Park, Mt. Mahadev benefits from the unique ecological richness that characterizes this protected area. The proximity of the mountain to the national park not only contributes to the lushness of the landscape but also enhances the biodiversity of the region. The area surrounding Mt. Mahadev is home to an abundance of both flora and fauna, thriving in the undisturbed wilderness.

The flora of this region is dominated by dense forests of pine trees and birches, which flourish in the cool, high-altitude environment. These forests provide a pristine habitat for a variety of plant species, some of which are unique to the region, creating a natural sanctuary for wildlife and maintaining the ecological balance of the area. Trek Itinerary

01

DAY 1: SRINAGAR TO FAKIRGUJRI TO LIDWAS

  • Altitude: 2000 m to 3300m
  • Time Taken: 45 min ( 20 KM Drive ) , 8km Trek ( 7 Hours)
  • Campsite: Lidwas
The journey begins with an early morning pick-up from Srinagar at 6:00 AM, followed by a scenic drive to Fakirgujri, Dara, situated approximately 20 kilometers from the city. Upon arrival, the trek leader will provide a briefing about the trek, ensuring you are fully prepared for the adventure ahead. Before setting off, a packed lunch will be provided to keep your energy up throughout the day. The trek starts with a steady ascent, following the meandering path along the Dara Nala. Along the way, we will pass through key locations such as Padshahpal, Digwas, Darawani, and Bobjan before finally reaching our destination, Lidwas. Lidwas is situated 8 kilometers from Fakirgujri Dara, and the entire journey will take approximately 7 hours to complete. As we ascend, we will encounter a rich variety of flora and fauna, including various species of birds and the Himalayan langur. The area is also home to the endangered Hangul deer and the elusive black bear, adding to the region’s wildlife charm. The trail requires us to cross the Dara Nala multiple times, sometimes wading through the river, and at other points, crossing over bridges. The continuous ascent can be physically demanding, but the scenic beauty surrounding us makes every step worth it. We will make a stop at Bobjan for a well-deserved lunch break before continuing on the trek. After several hours of steady climbing, we will reach Lidwas, located at an altitude of 3,300 meters (10,827 feet). This stunning campsite will serve as our base camp for the night. From Lidwas, we are treated to incredible views of the surrounding pine and birch forests, as well as a distant view of Srinagar city. The area is dotted with Gujjar mud and wood hutments, offering a glimpse into the lives of the pastoral gypsies who roam these highlands. The evening brings a magical sunset, with the soft light casting an enchanting glow over the entire landscape. Once we arrive at the campsite, you can settle in and relax, enjoying a warm cup of evening tea with snacks. As night falls, a delicious bowl of warm soup will be served, followed by a hearty dinner, complete with a sweet treat to end the day on a high note. The nights in these mountain regions are typically filled with stars, offering a perfect opportunity for star-gazing. If the skies are clear, the celestial beauty above will leave you in awe, making it an unforgettable experience in the heart of the mountains.
